ECOmodation - a sustainability label for the entire holiday home industry

In collaboration with experts from the "Zentrum für nachhaltigen Tourismus" at Eberswalde University in Germany, Interhome has developed the ECOmodation sustainability label. Whether it's a holiday home in Croatia with solar panels on the roof or a chalet in the Swiss Alps with energy-efficient household appliances: Initially, we are checking all the accommodation in our portfolio against the certification criteria. In a second step, we will make the sustainability label available to the entire holiday home industry. Our long-term goal is for ECOmodation to serve as a reliable standard for the ever-growing target group of environmentally conscious holiday guests looking for sustainable holiday accommodation throughout the industry.

The 24 criteria that a vacation home must meet in order to receive the “ECOmodation” sustainability label includes aspects such as 100 percent renewable energy, an ecological heating system, energy-efficient household appliances, at least double-glazed windows and recycling. Social and legal issues are also taken into account.

You are probably already familiar with our “green tree”, which, to date, has been awarded to our sustainable accommodation. ECOmodation replaces the “green tree” and goes far beyond it: the accommodation can only be awarded the sustainability label if all 24 criteria are met. This means we meet the strict EU guidelines such as the “Green Claims Directive” or “Empowering Consumers Directive” and are therefore fit for the future.

For the certification, Interhome is working with the Austrian company ECOmodation GmbH, which specializes in sustainable solutions for the environment, climate and economy. ECOmodation GmbH acts as an independent body that evaluates the data of the holiday accommodation and awards the sustainability label if the criteria is met. In addition, ECOmodation GmbH will carry out regular audits, both digitally and on site, to ensure that the awarded accommodation continues to earn the sustainability label in the future. ECOmodation is displayed on all Interhome websites and you can filter for it.

Precise calculation of the CO2e footprint

We attach great importance to transparency in our commitment to sustainability. For example, we have recently started showing the exact  CO2e footprint for a stay, on the Interhome website. In cooperation with the Austrian company BEESark, the footprint is calculated for each Interhome accommodation by calculating the emissions of the guests at maximum occupancy per night.

These values are essential for our climate goal of halving Interhome's footprint by 2030. The footprint is also becoming increasingly important for travellers, and demand for it continues to rise. We report the footprint for all our accommodation regardless of whether it has been awarded the ECOmodation certification.
